Holiday Homework

Please do not forget to keep going with your research project about your chosen 'Great Briton'. Remember these are due in on Friday 9th January 2009.

Keep up with your reading everyday! Remember the reading task set in school during Book Week in November. Will you have read eight books and recorded them on your grid?

Have a look at the great songs and videos on our Science topics on the website that we shared in class. www.simplescience.net
Remember that we move onto circuits when we return to school in January.

Have a happy Christmas and a restful holiday!

Mass

The whole school celebrated Mass together in Church on Thursday. This was the final part of our Advent journey in school. Father has asked us all to ask our grown ups to attend Mass on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Well done for the great readings, singing and recorder playing.

Our Nativity

Well done to Years 5 and 6 for a wonderful Nativity last Monday evening.
The production of 'The Late Wise Man' was fun to perform and followed the journey of Artaban, the 4th wise man, who found Jesus everywhere. Everybody spoke out and sang beautifully. It was a lovely end to our Nativity productions in school.

Research Project

This week the children have been set their research project.
They have been asked to pick any Great Briton ( who is dead), research them and compile a project about that person. We have discussed this in detail in school and come up with lots of very interesting suggestions. Remember to include key facts, pictures, photos, your own artwork and the all important bibliography (a list of where you got your information from!). Remember there are also house points for presentation!
The project is due in on Friday 9th January. We can not wait to read them!

Music Assembly

On Thursday morning, the Year 6 guitarists and recorder players joined the children in Year 4 to perform in a music assembly. Year 4 have been learning their instruments for a term and were keen to show the school just what they can do.
Year 6 then went on to play the pieces they have learnt this term including: 'My heart will go on' and 'Jingle Bells.'
Lots of parents were able to attend the assembly. It showed just what a musical bunch we all are!

Making our Confession

Today, as part of our Advent preparation, Year 3, 4 and 6 attended a service of reconcilliation in the school hall.
After this, Year 4 and 6 made thier confession with Fr David, Fr Dan and Fr Prem. This makes up one part of our Advent journey in school. Year 5 will make thier confession tomorrow.

Continuing Advent preparations

On Friday Year 5 and 6 continued preparing for the Christmas season. We have been spending time learning our songs for our Nativity and practising the play in Church. We must now work on speaking out and projecting our voices so that they can hear us at the back. We will be continuing with our rehearsals next week but WITHOUT scripts and lyrics!

Today, the Second Sunday of Advent, was a family mass at Sacred Hearts and Holy Souls Church. Years 5 and 6 read very well and Year 3 and 4 sang a song from 'Are we nearly there yet?' beautifully. Well done everyone!

Thursday, 4 December 2008

What a performance!

We have been really lucky this week in school. Yesterday afternoon we had the chance to see the Year 3 / Year 4 Nativity production and this afternoon we all all watched Reception's play.
Both productions were excellent - the children sang beautifully and all the 'actors' spoke out clearly and enthusiastically.
Year 5 and 6 will have a lot to live up to on the 15th! We are practicing in Church this week. Scripts and song words will not be used from Monday onwards!

Advent and the Nativity

We are now in the season of Advent. All the children have been given their 'Walk with Me' booklets and calendars for the season. In the pack, Mrs Girling has also included how to make your own Advent wreath. If you have made this at home, please could you bring it back into school to form part of our prayer focus. Well done to Jade and Kirsty for making their wreaths so quickly!

We are now learning all our songs and words for our Nativity. This week we will be making a number of trips to Church in order to practice. All scripts have been given out and first run throughs have been very enthusiastic. Keep learning your words!

Mr Incredible's Dilemma

On Friday Year 6 had to help Mr Incredible make a very difficult decision.

As part of our Visual Literacy unit, we stepped into Mr Incredible's shoes and identified all his thoughts and feelings as he decided whether to accept Mirage's mission or not.
We then proceeded to send Mr Incredible down 'conscience alley' as we shouted all the reasons 'for' and 'against' accepting the mission. We expressed our opinions clearly and with emotive language. Ultimately he decided to accept the mission. Well done Year 6!

The Incredibles!

For the next two weeks in literacy, we will be basing our work around the film ' The Incredibles'.

Today we imagined we were top executives in an advertising company. It was our job to come up with an amazing caption for the film poster to persuade people to watch it. We worked in groups to identify 'wow' vocabulary and devices to encourage people to see the film. Many of our captions are now on our 'working wall' in class. Some of the captions are indeed 'incredible'.

Book Week

Last week in school has been our annual 'Book Week'.
We had chance to take part in lots of exciting activities to help us understand how important and tremendously fun reading can be.
In our Literacy lessons we had the chance to look at the school book fayre ( and some of us returned to buy books after school!) We all wrote 'wow' book reviews about our favourite books and shared these with others in our class. In addition, our teachers shared their 'favourite' read with their class!
The high point of the week was last Friday when all children and staff had the chance to dress up. The theme for KS1 was Safari and the theme for KS2 was a book character. Everyone put in a huge amount of effort and we were all able to share our costumes in a special book assembly on Friday afternoon.
Reading has never been such fun!

The Golden Key

On Wedneday children in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 had the chance to watch an exciting and informative production in school.
A theatre company put on a special play in the school hall which presented us with lots of 'food for thought'. We watched as the princess was 'tricked' into eating a very unhealthy diet and now know just how important it is to eat 5 a day!
This was a very enjoyable play and will help us all be part of a 'healthy school'!

KS2 Mass

Today KS2 celebrated mass in school with Fr David.
The theme of the mass was 'heaven is' . The Mass was led by Year 6 who all read well. Well done to all!
Afterwards Mr Kelly gave Father his special birthday present - can you guess what it was?

Poetry

This week in literacy we have been looking at various forms of poetry. On Friday we reminded ourselves what is meant by an acrostic poem and looked at various examples. To finish our lesson, we decided to write a brief class acrostic poem. We improved our ideas through discussion and this was our finished product!

Shining and shimmering like a golden penny over-seeing the whole wide world.
Unhappiness fades away as the sun creeps out of his bed.
Nothing can extinguish the golden sun - except for the folds of nightime.

Can you work out what we are describing?

Thursday, 6 November 2008

The Blitz

This afternoon Year 6 have been learning about the Blitz. We now know where the word comes from and what it means.

We all had the chance to look at some 'primary sources': historical photos and first hand accounts. This helped us to understand how deverstating the bombing was during the Second World War and what it would have been like to have lived through this scary period of history.

Next week we will continue to research the Blitz and write a non-chronological report containing all the key information.

The return from Half Term

We return to school for the second half of our term tomorrow.

Over the half term break the children have worked on maths and literacy homework tasks linked to their targets and these need to be in school tomorrow.

We have a busy few weeks ahead; football trials, netball practice and swimming club start straight away! We will also be using all our new playground games this week with Year 6 organising their use. Play time will certainly be great fun!

On a quest

This week in Literacy we are writing a Quest.

Thog and Nat have been given a task...... it is up to us to decide what it is and where they must go. We have so far written 'wow' character profiles and settings. Watch this space to find out where this adventure takes us and if Thog and Nat are successful!

What a Puzzle!

This morning Year 6 had a trip to Archbishop Ilsley. We were lucky enough to spend the morning solving fun and tricky maths puzzles in groups. Two of our favourites were balancing penguins on a wobbley piece of ice and fitting together all the pieces of a tricky and colourful jig- saw puzzle.

The morning gave us all chance to work in a team and learn how to PLAN a solution. Everyone worked together brilliantly and we hope now to bring all these problem solving skills to our maths lessons!

Year 3 Assembly

On Tuesday our Faith Friends in Year 3 did a very enjoyable and well prepared assembly on 'The Rosary'. We were reminded that October is the month of Mary and... a Mr Barton look-a-like even reminded the school how we say the Rosary.

On Tuesday afternoon, everyone in Year 3 and Year 6 met in the hall to pray a decade of the Rosary together. It was very special to share this.

Tuesday, 7 October 2008

Making new friends

This afternoon we met with our Faith Friends in Year 3.

Both classes had written letters to their Faith Friends and we read them to each other. It was lovely to get to know a little more about Year3. We will now display Year 3's letters on our prayer focus that we can think of them during our prayer times. It is always great to make a new friend!

Year 6 visits the library

Today Year 6 made their termly trip to the library.

We learnt how to use the index system to find books and we have found out about all the research books in the 'homework' section. Hopefully we will have chance to put these new skills and resources to use when we do our project over the Christmas holidays.

Assembly

Year Six have spent the last few days getting ready for their assembly on Tuesday.
We will be sharing our experiences at Alton Castle with everyone and explaining the thoughts and actions which we will now live out at school.
We know that we have to learn our words carefully and speak up in the hall. This year we have added a bit of a twist in the way that we are re-telling what happened.
Year 6 parents and Years 1 - 5 will have to wait until Tuesday morning to find out!

Faith Friends

Yesterday Year 6 met their Faith Friends in Year 3 for the first time.
A Faith Friend is a child in another year who needs our help and support as they make their sacramental preparation. Year 6 will help Year 3 as they make their first Confession and First Holy Communion. Year 3 will help Year 6 as we get ready for our Confirmation in June.
Yesterday we worked with each other and talked about the message which Father David shared with us at mass on Monday afternoon. Year 3 recorded some wonderful reflections in their book. Well done!

Retreat Week

Year 6 returned on Wednesday evening from a wonderful retreat at Alton Castle.
We all really enjoyed activities such as climbing, crates, trekking and survival. The final mass on Tuesday evening was also really special and Year 6 participated beautifully.
During Thursday and Friday, we continued our Alton Castle reflection in school. This included making 'Wanted' posters for a good disciple of Jesus and sharing our favourite moments of the trip. We ended the week together with Mass in School where we were joined by Father David, Mrs Aldred, Mr Kelly, Mrs Girling and parents.
It really has been a memorable week. Year 6 thank Mr Barton for organising it and look forward to presenting their assembly about their visit soon!

Sunday, 14 September 2008

Alton Castle

Year 6 are off to Alton Castle tomorrow for three days. We have been preparing for this retreat over the last week and we are all very excited! We will tell you about all the activities we get up to on our return!

'Pack up your Troubles'

Yesterday Years 2 to 6 were lucky enough to watch a production of the play 'Pack up your Troubles' in school. The play introduced the key events of WWII and helped us to understand new words and ideas such as rationing and evacuation. Year 6 can not wait to start their history topic now and really enjoyed the dramatic and enthusiastic performance! (Especially the sing-along at the end!)

A New Year.......

Term starts on Thursday and the new Year 6 will begin their final months at Holy Souls School.

This blog will be a record for them of all the activities they will participate in throughout their final year at primary school. It will also give us a chance to share what we learn and do with anyone who reads the blog. Keep popping back to see what we have been up to!

Leavers' Assembly

On Friday morning Year 6 presented their final assembly to the school.

We had chance to share memories of our Holy Souls School Career and also the skills and lessons we had learnt. High points certainly included Shoun depicting a wonderful Elvis-style Mr Kelly and Connor as Mr Barton. We sang a beautiful re-worked version of the Beatles 'little help from my friends' and reflected on photos of us in Reception and now. We have all really grown up!

Thursday, 17 July 2008

Music Assembly

Today both KS1 and KS2 had special music assemblies.

Both were to celebrate the work and dedication Miss Moss had shown at Holy Souls School. It was a wonderful opportunity for all classes to show case the music they have been studying in class this year. Year 3, for example, had great chime bar players in their first song, Year 5 showed us brilliant 1950s dancers and year 6 made up very apt lyrics about the teachers in school. It was a fantastic way to spend a morning and Miss Moss seemed to enjoy it all!

Well done everyone!

French Picnic

Today Year 6 had their french picnic in the school playground.
We have been preparing for this over our French lessons in the last half term. We were able to ask for different foods such as bread with jam, cheese or nutella and drinks such as, cola, mineral water or Orangina.
It was really great fun and the perfect end to our French sessions.
We would like to say a big thank you to Mr McCarthy from Archbishop Ilsley for running the french programme in school!

Awards Assembly

This morning KS2 had their awards assembly. We were able to celebrate each others' successes through the year - sporting, academic and attendance.
It was really wonderful to see all those children who have represented our school in all kinds of sports and those who also gained certificates in activities out of school, such as the 'Race for Life' and local drama groups.
Well done to all children in Key Stage Two and especially Year 6 - what a bunch of shining stars we are!

Tuesday, 15 July 2008

Sports Day

This afternoon was KS2 Sports Day, which had been postponed after the bad weather last week.

All the children competed in their houses in a range of events such as: uni-hockey, tennis ball relay, netball shootout, football and the 'drinks station' to name but a few! All children showed great sportsmanship! Congratulations to St. Bernadettes who were the winners. Congratulations to Year 6 for beginning a great Mexican Wave.

Year 6 say a big thank you to everyone who helped organise the afternoon and are delighted that the sun shone for our last Sports Day at Holy Souls School!

Buzz

Year 6 are looking at the Bee Movie in Literacy and PSHE this week.
In the film, Barry the Bee has to make difficult decisions about which job to take in the hive. Year 6 are entering their last full week at Holy Souls and realise that they have already made some huge decisions such as which school to go to in September. This week we will be looking at the key characters in the film and the messages the film encourages us to think about. It's going to BEE wild!

Not Guilty!!

On Friday morning we held our court case. Kensuke had been charged with keeping Michael a prisoner on the island.
Both sets of lawyers made their case and Kensuke (Alex) and Michael (Kelly) both stepped into the witness box to be questioned and cross-examined. Everyone did a brilliant job and there was real tension in the court room!
After much deliberation, the jury found Kensuke to be 'not guilty'. Year 6 are writing up the case in the form of a newspaper report for homework this weekend. They should be a great read!

DT project

This afternoon we have all worked on our Anderson shelters. We have made a vast number of different structures - some complete with bunk beds, tables and even lamps! Most of us followed our designs but improved and tweaked our ideas as we went.
Tomorrow we will evaluate our designs and see which are best suited to their purpose. Some of the interious are quite luxurious and the decor is very imaginative!! Well done Year 6.

Air Raid Shelters

This afternoon we started our group work on our Anderson Shelters. We have made our detailed plans and technical drawings. Now we are building our creations. We will keep you posted on our progress!!

Assembly

It is our Leaving assembly on 18th July and this week year 6 are practising. The process is quite sad because we know that this is the last assembly that we will do together. However, it is wonderful to have the opportunity to reflect on our time at Holy Souls and everything that we experienced in this time. Put the date in your diary!

Monday, 7 July 2008

Order in the Court!

Today we started to prepare in Year 6 for our important court case.
Kensuke has been arrested with the charge that he kept Michael prisoner on an island. Did he or didn't he? The Year 6 lawyers for the prosecutor and the defendant are gathering evidence and putting together their arguments.
Court will be in session on Wednesday and the jury will decide......

(If you have no idea what we are talking about, check out 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo - it is a really great read!)

Sunday, 6 July 2008

Merci!

On Friday, Year 6 had their third french lesson. We have been getting ready for our 'French pic nic', which we will have at the end of term, for some weeks now.
We have learnt how to greet someone in French, how to ask for certain drinks and now we are learning how to ask for food such as bread with cheese or jam.
In fact, we are so keen on learning French that sometimes we have a practice during 'spare' moments in the day!

Finding our way

Today in Geography we learnt how to use six figure grid references on an OS map. To start with we found this quite tricky, but working with talk partners and in then in groups, we managed to find lots of references on a map of Birmingham.

The children in Year 6 will not need SAT NAV now!

Wednesday, 2 July 2008

Induction Day

Today most of the children in Year 6 had their induction day at their new school. Year 6 will share news about their new experiences, new teachers and new classmates tomorrow!

Tuesday, 1 July 2008

What is a vocation?

Today Year 6 had a visit from Chris Smith who came to talk to us about 'Vocations'.

We learnt that this word means 'being called By God' and literally comes from the Latin word 'vocare' which means 'to call'. It was the first time that some of us had thought about our own special mission as followers of Christ. Our mission is our vocation and each vocation is different.

We found the afternoon very interesting and joined in with lots of our own thoughts and ideas. We now know that our vocation is becoming the person that God wants us to be.

Monday, 30 June 2008

Sports and ICT meeting.

Today all the staff had a chance to look at Year 3 and Year 6 blog. They were very impressed! It has given them the confidence to have a go themselves. So look out for the new blogs from other year groups!

The staff also had a very interesting meeting about PE and the activities we teach. We now know how tricky some of the activities we ask you to do are!!!

Sunday, 29 June 2008

Architects in the Making!

On Friday afternoon, Year 6 were set a challenge.
Using only 4 pieces of A4 paper, glue and a pair of scissors, each group was asked to design a bridge, supported by books on either side and with a span of exactly 20cm. The bridge was free- standing, it could not be supported underneath. Each bridge was tested to see what load it could carry without bending or breaking.
This was a great opportunity for our year to investigate what makes a structure strong and how designs need to be improved and reviewed in the 'creating process'.
All groups had a very sensible go at the activity and five out of the six designs were deemed a success!
We hope to put photos of the activity on our blog shortly!

Rounders

This evening our school rounders team played in our League Tournament at Swanshurst School. We played well against four other schools and there was very tough competition. Everyone showed great sportsmanship and real enthusiasm. Holy Souls played with determination but were not the winners of our League. Congratulations to Our Lady of the Wayside. Well done to Year 6!

Wednesday, 25 June 2008

A very sporty day!

Today some of our children in Year 5 and Year 6 attended the Gaelic Football tournament. They have only been playing this sport for a couple of weeks and therefore did very well. They even reached a semi-final match!
Back at school, Year 6 enjoyed a fun-packed sports afternoon participating in athletics / relay races and rounders. We were lucky enough to have Mr Clifford and Mr Morris to help teach us. To top it off, the swimming club met for their weekly training after school and improved their underwater swimming.
Well done to everyone!

Rationing

We decided after a long discussion today that the rations for a grown man during WWII were just not enough. We found it hard to imagine what life would be like without the staple foods we are used to today and the lack of treats. Can you imagine having just one egg a week? By the end of our history lesson today we had also looked at propaganda Government posters encouraging people to stick to the rations and we had made our own ration books!!

Our Visitor

This morning Year 6 were visited by Mrs Cooke from Archbiship Ilsley School. She gave us a really useful talk about our induction next week and what we can expect in September. She also gave us the chance to ask lots of questions and put our minds at rest about things that were worrying us, or we were not sure about. Now we can not wait for our 'taster day' and where we will have the chance to try out new subjects in 'mini-lessons' and eat the canteen food!

Sunday, 22 June 2008

Summer Fayre

Saturday 21st June was the summer fayre. The damp weather did not dampen spirits and a large number of children and grown ups came to support the school and the PFA. Every year group sang songs from a specific decade or period from the last century. Year 6 performed 'Quartermaster's store' and 'Washing on the Seigfried Line' with enthusiasm! All year groups sang brilliantly and many also put on dance numbers.
Everyone was invited to come in fancy dress and prizes will be awarded to the best dressed soon. Will it be you?

Parish Day of Prayer

On Friday ( 20th June) it was the parish of Sacred Heart and Holy Soul's day of prayer.
Children from Year Six spent time in collective worship over at Church. We were able to pray before the blessed sacrament which was on display at the Altar. We felt special to be involved in this important day for our parish.

The life of an Evacuee

Today in our history topic we found out about Ken, a boy who was evacuated during World War II. We looked at historical evidence - the diary extracts of this young boy - to help us understand want it meant to be evacuated and how children felt. We discussed how we would feel if we were forced to leave our homes and move to the safety of the countryside. Although we understand that Evacuation was a very important Govornment policy, we agreed that most of us would miss home, family and friends!

Wednesday, 18 June 2008

Sing-a-long with the 1940's!

Today Year 6 have been practicing their songs for the Summer Fete on Saturday. We are doing two songs from the 1940's ( our topic in history) but we will not ruin the surprise and reveal them now! The theme is 'the last 100 years'. Holy Souls School has celebrated the fact it is 100 years old during this academic year. Every year group is singing songs from a particular decade. Everyone is invited to dress up in clothes from the last 100 years. There will be a prize for the best! All are welcome from 12.00 noon until 3.00pm.

Tuesday, 17 June 2008

Decisions

Today Year 6 made a visit to the life bus. We spent a very interesting afternoon talking about our bodies, things we could do which might harm it and making responsible decisions. We even had a chance to meet Harold again, despite the fact that he does not normally visit year 6 groups!! We hope that 6K enjoy their afternoon in the life bus on Thursday!

Monday, 16 June 2008

Bird Show

Today our Year 6 children, along with other children from St. Bernadette's, visited Archbishop Ilsley School for a Falconry display. The 'bird man' showed us many birds of prey and we were able to answer question on adaptation, habitats and food chains. It fitted in really well with some of the work we have done in Science this year. We thank Mr Kelly, Mrs Girling and Mrs Dwyer for coming with us this afternoon!

Sunday, 15 June 2008

DT Shelters Project

This weekend the children in Year 6 are investigating how structures are made. We are looking at famous buildings throughout the world - such as St. Paul's Cathedral, the Sydney Opera House and the Eiffel Tower. How are they made? What gives them their strength?

We have been thinking about the structure of the Anderson Shelter used in WWII. Over the next few weeks we are going to investigate how we can build a model of this shelter which is strong and provides protection. What materials shall we use? How shall we build it? Keep popping back to the blog to see how we are getting on!!

Science Week Continues

This morning we investigated how birds' beaks are adapted to the type of food they eat. We tried to pick up jelly beans with cocktail sticks, lolly sticks and plastic cups. We determined which of these 'beaks' was best adapted to 'eat' this type of food. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about the work of the great Charles Darwin and the observations he made on the Galapagos Islands.

This afternoon eight children presented all the work we have covered this week. We took down the models of our adapted creatures, showed everyone the photos of our work with coca-cola and talked about our density experiments. It was very good fun to hear just what Year 3 and Year 4 had been investigating. Year 3 showed us what happens when you add fruit to fizzy drinks and Year 4 shared some fabulous work about forces.

We are all budding scientists in Key Stage 2!

Wednesday, 11 June 2008

Wow experiments!

Year 6 have been very busy with Science Week. Yesterday we discussed, planned and created creatures which are adapted to specific habitats. It was a great opportunity to be very creative and work in groups to bring our scientific ideas alive!

Today we carried out two experiments. We discovered that if we add 'chalky' sweets e.g. sherbet to a bottle of coca cola, they react with the acidic coke and it creates a 'fountain' as the coke fizzed out of the bottle. It looked impressive and we discussed ways to improve it next time!

We also learned about what density means. We discovered that when we mix syrup, water and oil they separate. Syrup is the most dense - it fell to the bottom layer. Oil was the least dense.

What experiments will tomorrow bring?

A Special Afternoon

Year 6 shared a very special afternoon. Firstly we had an assembly with our Faith Friends in Year 3. They presented us with cards and bookmarks to celebrate our Confirmation. They are beautiful! Each one was in an individualised envelope. They must have taken ages to make!

A while later, Bishop Pargeter visited Year 6 for a talk before we make our Confirmation this week. He answered many of our questions and we were able to demonstrate that we are ready to be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit at Confirmation.
In addition the Bishop attended a whole school assembly in the hall where we shared prayers and hymms.

It really was a very special afternoon!

Confirmation

It is Confirmation next week in Year 6. This weekend for homework we have some reflective activities to complete about the Gifts and Fruits of the Spirit and links between Baptism and Confirmation. Please remember to bring it into school on Monday!

Harvington Hall

Today Year 6 visited Harvington Hall. We had a really interersting tour around the hall and spotted no less than 7 priest holes!! Lots of us had the chance to go into one of the priest holes. We could not imagine how hard it must have been to be in that confined space for days!!! After lunch we celebrated mass at the church there with Father David. It was a beautiful service where we focussed on the Saints and preparation for Confirmation next week. A good day was had by all!!

Girls' 5 a side football

Today girls from Year 6, with Mr Barton, represented Holy Souls at the girls' 5 a side football competition in Perry Barr. The girls were able to play in wonderful weather and enjoyed meeting other teams from other schools. Our team played well and had a very successful first result of 5-1!! This was the first time this team has played together and they should be very pleased with their efforts throughout the afternoon. It is the boys' turn tomorrow!

Making a promise.

Today we have been talking about promises - especially what it means to make one. We have linked this into our work on Baptismal promises and understanding each of these that we will renew next week. Yesterday afternoon we spent time with our Year 3 Faith Friends explaining about our Confirmation preparation and sharing the new things we had learnt.

Monday, 2 June 2008

Visit to Church

This week we will be practicing for our Confirmation. Today was our first full run-through in Church and a chance to meet some of the children of the Parish who will be joining us in making this Sacrament. We must keep up practicing our readings and hymms as the week goes on!

Friday, 23 May 2008

Celebrating Mass

Today we celebrated a whole school mass in Church. Year 3 had the opportunity to wear their First Holy Communion outfits again and they read beautifully. It was great to have the opportunity to say a special prayer for our Faith Friends and celebrate the fact they have made their Communion.

Rounders Match

Last night year 6 played their first rounders match against St Paul's. It was a friendly match but was tough at the same time. Both teams played extremely well. The final result was 6 rounders to 5 rounders.Everyone had a great time! We would like to thank St Paul's for making the journey over here and for taking part.

Cross Country Event

Last night children in Year 6 and Year 5 took part in the annual cross country event. Many schools took part, competition was tough and our children were a credit to the school. We did very well and were runners up! By Fiona

Half Term Project

This half term the children in Year 6 have been asked to complete a research project on their chosen Saint's name. Why have you chosen this Saint? Why are they important to you? What fascinating facts can you find? Children must bring this in on the Monday after half term so that we can share what we have found and it can make part of our Confirmation project. I look forward to reading them!!

Writing our own prayers.

Today we have been writing our prayer to the Holy Spirit to display in church.
It has been a long and thoughtful process, we started with the prayer to the Holy Spirit and wrote our own using the prayer as a guide. We wrote about the Spirit of God, the Fire of the Spirit and the Wind of the Spirit.

First Cricket Match of the Year

Last night children in year 5 and 6 played our first cricket match against St. Francis. It was a very tough match and both teams played very well - showing great sportsmanship! Holy Souls School were victorious in the end. We look forward to our future matches! By Matthew and Connor.

This week we have met with our Faith Friends. A Faith Friend is a buddy in year 3 who we are supporting in their sacramental preparation. They, in turn, are helping us get ready for our Confirmation. They are someone who is always there for you when you need them. We enjoyed explaining the fruits and also the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We also enjoyed creating a story board with our faith friend about how we will use the fruits in our lives. By Connor and Keely.

Getting Ready for Confirmation

Year 6 have been preparing for their Confirmation for the last few months. Today we have been identifying the different ways in which the Holy Spirit is symbolised in extracts from the bible. We are looking at the Holy Spirit because we will be receiving it in the Sacrament of Confirmation. This afternoon we will share what we have learnt with our Faith Friends in Year 3.

Welcome

Welcome everyone to our Year 6 Blog. We will attempt to tell you what we have been doing in class on a daily basis. With SATs over, we are preparing for our Confirmation, our trip to Harvington Hall and many important events before we leave Holy Souls. This will act as a record of our final days at primary school!
